North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association announces Great Places Award Winners.
Anyone who has enjoyed the classic charm of a Main Street knows intuitively when it’s a “great” place to be. It’s often the “heart of the downtown” and the place where people go to gather and enjoy an evening out. The people of Morehead City will be glad to know that Evans Street has officially been recognized as a “Great Main Street” in the 2017 Great Places in North Carolina awards program, sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC).
Morehead City’s nomination noted the history, great mix of uses, and overall vibrancy that defines Evans Street and makes it the heart of Morehead City. It was the combination of existing vitality and proactive dedication of the City and community over time to the success of Evans Street that led the expert panel to select it as a 2017 Great Main Street in the Professionals’ Category.
The panel noted the importance of public-private partnerships and the physical as well as programmatic improvements to create place-making attractions that are inviting to the public. Merrill Flood, who is the assistant city manager of Greenville, NC, and served on the expert panel said, “It’s quite a transformation. They’re making the right investments so you really enjoy their public spaces.”
